Kutao Floricultural Ecopark

Kutao Floricultural Ecopark was built in 2012. It is situated in Kutao Community, known as the “village of flowers”, and covers a land area of 1200 mu (80 hectare). The ecopark has a total of 700,000 plants; more than 30 kinds of flowers are in bloom every season. Supported by Laoshan District and Zhonghan Sub-District governments, the park is built mainly by the Residents Committee of Kutao Community as a comprehensive agricultural demonstration area that combines modern urban agriculture, tourism and sightseeing, leisure and vacationing. The park was selected as one of the first national agricultural tourism demonstration areas in 2013 and was rated as a national 3A tourist attraction in 2014 after it was officially opened in April that year. 

According to the legend recorded in the History of Kutao Village, it is said that a flower fairy came to the hill behind Kutao Village and made the old dying peach trees green, lush and fruit-bearing again. Soon the whole hill was covered in beautiful peach flowers and Kutao Village became famous. The flower fairy taught the villagers how to grow flowers. As a result, everyone here became an expert of growing flowers and passed on the skills from generation to generation for the past 100 years. Floriculture has become the business of every family in Kutao Village. The International Horticultural Exposition held in Qingdao in 2014 had a parallel exhibition in Kutao Floricultural Ecopark. The sculpture of the flower fairy was set up here as a symbol of best wishes for prosperity and happiness of local residents.   

Kutao Floricultural Ecopark enjoys an excellent location with well-established transportation infrastructure. Right on the east of the Binhai Avanue, the park is served by buses stopping right at the gate and Metro Line 11 across the street. On its east is the Laoshan Mountain, on its west is Qingdao International Innovation Park, on its south is Zhangcun River and on its north the Laoshan Campus of Ocean University of China and Qingdao No.1 International School. The park has woods, water and flowers, showing features of Kutao as the centenary village of flowers. With over 170 species of rare plants, the park has four functional zones, namely, flower exhibition zone, fruit plants and leisure zone, sightseeing zone and floral industry comprehensive service zone. There are about 34 scenic spots, four exhibition halls for flower knowledge promotion, orchid display, plant R&D and floriculture respectively. There are also 8 rivers and ponds scattering around the park.
